Sparks eliminated at ASA Nationals, settle for 65th place

   COLLEGE STATION, TEXAS.- The Sparks split a pair of contests on Thursday and were eliminated from the 160-team ASA National Tournament to finish in a tie for 65th place.
   California Lite 3, Sparks 2- Orland Park rallied from an early deficit to tie the contest at 2-2, but surrendered a late run to face elimination in the double-elimination bracket.

   Sparks 7, Mizuno Pride 2- Facing elimination, the Sparks kept matters alive with a victory in their first test in the loser's bracket on Thursday.
   East Cobb (Ga.) Bullets 14, Sparks 1- Orland Park was sent to the loser's bracket in its second contest Wednesday. The Sparks will await the winner of the Washington Sidewinders vs. Mizuno Pride in a 2 p.m. Thursday contest.
   Sparks 3, Maryland Chill 2- Orland Park captured its second straight one-run victory to open elimination play at the ASA Nationals.
   Sparks 7, California Grapettes 6- Rallying from a 6-3 deficit, the Sparks earned an extra-inning victory to earn third place in their pool. Carrie Falasca scored the winner in the eighth on a suicide squeeze by Candice Koch. Taylor Steinhilber gained the mound victory in relief, gaining support with superb defensive play from Alyssa Gunther.
   Georgia Crusaders 6, Sparks 3- Orland Park held a 3-2 lead in the fifth inning, but eventually fell victim to six errors in a comeback loss that sent the Sparks into a third-place pool game on Tuesday.

   WATERTOWN, WIS.- The Sparks (13-4) captured a second-place finish in the Wisconsin ASA National Qualifier last weekend to earn a bid to the ASA National Tournament in College Station, Texas on Aug. 1-8
.
   Orland Park posted a 5-0 record for the weekend with two pool play victories and elimination bracket wins over the Menomonee Falls Angels (8-0), the Kenosha Cyclones (6-1) and Homer Hawks (6-5). The Sparks had advanced to the winner's bracket final before rain cancelled the tournament on Sunday.
