The 2010 18U Sparks captured third place in the 41-team ASA Chicago Metro to earn a bid to the Class A ASA Nationals on Aug. 1-8 in Hemet, Calif. (33rd Place).

Sparks capture 33rd place at ASA Nationals

   HEMET, CALIF.- The Orland Park Sparks 18-under (39-20-1) fell in the late innings on Friday to settle for a tie for 33rd place in the 103-team ASA Class A Nationals. Orland Park posted a 4-2 overall record in National tournament play.
   Chico Starz 4, Sparks 2- A two-run homer from Jessica Perkins (2-for-3) rallied the Sparks from a 1-0 deficit in the top of the sixth, but the Starz responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning to decide the verdict. Sarah Benak, Emma Jarrell and Jacki Fletcher (run) all added hits for Orland Park, which committed four errors and stranded four runners on base.
   Sparks 11, Texas Toros 0- Teagan Walsh (20-9) fired a perfect game with four strikeouts, while the Sparks scored five in the first inning and never looked back. Jacki Fletcher (2-for-4) belted a grand slam, while Krista Watson (two RBI) and Walsh were each 3-for-4. Emma Jarrell was also 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI.
   Sparks 8, Calif. Rocksteady 3- The Sparks scored in five different innings, while Amanda Oberc earned the victory and Walsh worked a 1-2-3 seventh. Jessica Perkins was 2-for-3 with two runs, a double and steal to ignite the offense. Sarah Benak and Allie Seplak (steal) also rapped two hits, while Fletcher, Alex Washkowiak and Ashley Kopp each added RBI.
   Artesia Punishers 6, Sparks 5- After falling behind 5-3 in the top of the eighth, the Punishers scored three times in the bottom half to escape with the victory. Meanwhile, the Sparks stranded 10 runners in the contest, including two in scoring position in the top of the eighth inning.
   Lexi Southall was 3-for-4 with a double and run to pace the Sparks' offense, while Jacki Fletcher finished 2-for-4. Orland Park got RBI from Teagan Walsh, Ashley Kopp (double) and Southall. Jessica Perkins also clouted a double.
   Sparks 7, SoCal Commotion 0- Sarah Benak was 3-for-3 with an RBI and three runs scored and Teagan Walsh (19-8) didn't allow a runner in scoring position after the first inning in a four-hit shutout. Jacki Fletcher was also 3-for-4 with two stolen bases, while Krista Watson went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Emma Jarrell, Alex Washkowiak and Walsh also knocked in runs.
   Sparks 2, California Tornadoes 0- Sarah Benak scored on a wild pitch and Krista Watson knocked home Alex Washkowiak (1-for-2) with an insurance run, as the Sparks made the most of five hits to advance to the pool championship. Amanda Oberc and Teagan Walsh (win) combined on a two-hitter, also getting backed by singles from Benak, Oberc, Jacki Fletcher and Lexi Southall.

The Sparks were one of five organizational teams to qualify for ASA National Tournaments. . . all six Class of 2009 athletes advanced to continue their athletic careers in college. . . eight Class of 2010 athletes have made verbal commitments to accept college scholarships- Caryn Connors (Bucknell), Lexi Southall (St. Francis), Jacki Fletcher (Illinois-Chicago), Ashley Kopp (Northern Illinois), Sarah Benak (Aurora), Emma Jarrell (Western Illinois), Alex Washkowiak (Lewis) and Jenna Mychko (Illinois), as well as two 2011 athletes in Jessica Perkins (Illinois) and Teagan Walsh (Western Illinois). . . the Sparks only lost two winner's bracket contests the entire season. . . With a first-place finish in the ASA Chicago Metro tournament, the Sparks extended their streak of top five finishes to 11 in tournaments in which they've competed (dating to 1991)... The Sparks have qualified for Class A Nationals in the last 17 years they've been eligible to do so... Orland Park played teams from 14 different states and played 52 percent of their schedule (30 games) against teams that qualified for ASA National Tournaments.
