| Sparks (41-17) settle for 65th place at ASA Nationals |
Normal, IL- The Orland Park Sparks 18-under (41-17) were stunned in elimination play on Thursday morning at the 104-team Amateur Softball Association National Tournament, settling for a tie for 65th place.
Virginia Baseliners 2, Sparks 0- The Sparks were bounced from the double-elimination bracket, as they managed just one hit. After the Baseliners scored twice in the bottom of the sixth, the Sparks loaded the bases in the seventh when Ashley Rogers (error), Erica Nagel (hit batter) and Amie Raynor (sacrifice, error) reached safely. However, Alex Washkowiak hit a shot to third base that was turned into a game-ending triple play. Elena Wright managed the lone Orland Park hit and Rogers was the tough-luck mound loser, scattering five hits and allowing just one earned run.
Indiana Shockwave 9, Sparks 1- Orland Park committed six errors and yielded five unearned runs in the setback. The Sparks managed just three hits in the five-inning affair, as India Steward was 2-for-3 and Kelly Engwall rapped a single. Jorgi Calombaris collected the lone RBI with a bases-loaded walk.
Sparks 7, Kansas City Freeze 5- Kiersten Tinkoff (3-for-4) doubled home the tying runs and Kelly Engwall doubled home the eventual winning run, as the Sparks rebounded from a 5-2 deficit for their fifth straight victory. Erica Nagel was also 3-for-4 with an RBI. Orland Park also got RBI from India Steward and Carrie Falasca, while all nine offensive starters collected base hits. Teagan Walsh improved to 16-4 with the victory, firing five hitless innings to finish off the contest.
Sparks 7, Florida Select 1- Erica Nagel went 3-for-4 with two RBI to back the six-hit pitching of Hanna Lythberg to key the pool play victory. Elena Wright was 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Carrie Falasca and Jorgi Calombaris also knocked in runs. Kelly Engwall scored a pair of runs for the winners.
Sparks 8, Chico Starz 4- Erica Nagel and Alex Washkowiak each rapped two hits and knocked in a run for Orland Park, which jumped to an early 7-1 command. Jorgi Calombaris collected three RBI and Elena Wright knocked in two runs in the 11-hit Spark attack. Teagan Walsh earned the win on the mound, while Hanna Lythberg (two) and Ashley Rogers each tossed shutout innings.
